Replicating Windows for Historic Windows

Kurtis J. Suellentrop

This multimedia presentation reviews the history of fenestrations and aspects of replication of windows in historically significant buildings, especially in Texas.  The course will cover several aspects of historic window including: grids, mutins, shadowlines, finishes, mullions, glazing, operations and intricate details.  We will also discuss how to work with the local and regional Historic Review Committees as well as dealing with hazardous materials including lead, PCB’s and asbestos.  Finally we will discuss the pros and cons of the “replace vs renew” options concerning installation, thermal, acoustic, energy, light and recycling analysis.

If you want your clients to be happy, refer more business to you, and stay warm, dry and safe (and not to tick off the historic preservation community) Kurtis’ job is to make this easy for you.  He works with architects, engineers, and designers to find solutions to any issues involving your building envelope. Kurtis has a B.S. degree from the University of Missouri- Rolla in Mechanical Engineering with an emphasis in Design and Thermodynamics.  He has developed the Winco Historic Window Systems and this AIA-CES presentation.

Kurtis appreciates all aspects of the window designing, manufacturing and installation process. He gets to work at a desk, confer with mechanics and machinists at Winco’s factory and gets to be involved in the actual R&D, testing and installation. Because of this, Kurtis was a wide variety of footwear.

Kurtis lives in Saint Louis Missouri and shares his frequent flier miles with his wife and two young children.
